Tidal Interaction in High Mass X-ray Binaries

چکیده
Our aim is to investigate tidal interaction in High-Mass X-ray Binary stars in order to determine in which objects the rotation of the mass donors is synchronized or pseudosynchronized with the orbital motion of the compact companion. We calculate the pseudosynchronization period (Pps) and compare it with the rotational period of the mass donors (Prot). We find that (1) the Be/X-ray binaries are not synchronized, the mass donors rotate faster than the orbital period and the ratio Pps/Prot is 2 – 300; (2) the giant and supergiant systems are close to synchronization and for them the ratio Pps/Prot is 0.3 – 2.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملBlack Holes in Globular Clusters
We consider the implications of the presence of ∼ 1 stellar-mass black hole (BH) at the center of a dense globular cluster. We show that BH X-ray binaries formed through exchange interactions are likely to have extremely low duty cycles (< 10−3), consistent with the absence of BH X-ray transients in Galactic globular clusters. In contrast, we find that BH X-ray binaries formed through tidal cap...
متن کاملSpin-orbit Couplings in X-ray Binaries
We discuss the influence of tidal spin-orbit interactions on the orbital dynamics of close intermediate-mass X-ray binaries. In particular we consider here a process in which spin angular momentum of a contracting RLO donor star, in a synchronous orbit, is converted into orbital angular momentum and thus helps to stabilize the mass transfer by widening the orbit. Binaries which would otherwise ...
متن کاملOptical properties of High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXB) in the Small Magellanic Cloud
The SMC represents an exciting opportunity to observe the direct results of tidal interactions on star birth. One of the best indicators of recent star birth activity is the presence of significant numbers of High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) and the SMC has them in abundance! We present results from nearly 10 years of monitoring these systems plus a wealth of other groundbased optical data. Tog...
متن کاملGalactic Globular Clusters with Luminous X-Ray Binaries
Luminous X-ray binaries (>10 erg s, LMXBs) have a neutron star or black hole primary, and in globular clusters, most of these close binaries are expected to be have evolved from wider binaries through dynamical interactions with other stars. We sought to find a predictor of this formation rate that is representative of the initial properties of globular clusters rather than of the highly evolve...
